But, before you know it, the kids will be out of school with no homework begging for something to do. We understand it can be hard to find ways to keep your child occupied during the summer. And you may be asking, “What activities can you do in the summer?” Well, we’ve gathered the top ten things children can do this summer that will keep them on the go all season long.

Things Children Can Do This Summer They Will Love

1. Go Bird Watching

Your child’s summer shouldn’t be so boring that they resort to watching the grass grow… But nature does have more entertaining activities in-store, like bird watching. Bird watching is an activity many wouldn’t consider, but you’d be surprised to find how much your child might enjoy it. Not only does it give them a chance to observe colorful birds, but they can learn more about new species, too. It only takes a pair of binoculars and a field guide to get started. Your children may even enjoy making a game out of it to see who can spot the most birds in a given amount of time.

2. Try Gardening

If your child is more hands-on and prefers creating something rather than observing from afar, they might enjoy gardening. Not only is it fun for kids to play in the dirt, but it can be incredibly rewarding for children to watch their plants grow. It’s also an excellent opportunity to teach them how to properly care for plants.

3. Make a Wildlife Garden

Ok, we’re almost done with the outdoor activities! One of the most unique things children can do this summer is to create a wildlife garden. This doesn’t mean you’ll have bears and wolves outside your door, but it’s rather an oasis for birds, squirrels, rabbits, etc. All you need is birdhouses and small shelters of some kind along with feeders for food and water sources. Now, sit back and watch beautiful wildlife visit your own backyard.

4. Have a Movie Marathon

We know most parents are trying to peel their children away from the screens, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with a family movie night! To ensure it’s a true family effort, consider giving roles to each member of your family. Maybe mom pops the popcorn, dad pours the sodas, and the kids pick what movies to watch. Feel free to make it your own and rotate responsibilities each time you do it so mom and dad can pick some movies, too.

5. Build a Treehouse

We know… this is a big one. It’s certainly easier said than done and will likely be a month-long project, but it’s one of the most fun things children can do this summer. It all starts with the availability of a tree on your property. If you’re one of the lucky ones with a massive, sturdy tree in your backyard, then this one’s for you. Building a treehouse will require help from parents and/or older siblings. To do it, you’ll need to check local building codes, construct a plan, gather tools, build the platform, add posts or braces, install flooring, add walls and railings, raise the roof, and apply your finishing touches in the end. We know… it’s an absolute mouthful. An awesome treehouse will not only make your kids the most popular ones in the neighborhood, but it’ll provide decades of incredible memories, too.

6. Play a Summer Sport

Depending on where you’re located, certain summer leagues may be available for baseball, basketball, soccer, football, and several other sports. Week-long camps are also an option and will provide your active child with a great outlet for all that energy. If your child is interested in sports but not sure which one, sign them up for two to three camps throughout the summer so they can hone in on one.

7. Explore Your Hometown

After two years of quarantining, homeschooling, and being glued to tablets and laptops, it’s probably been a long time since your child has been to the local candy shop or movie theatre. So, grab the little ones, hop in the car, and spend a day out on the town. Whether it’s a visit to a local park, lake, arcade, or toy store, your child is sure to enjoy a return to normalcy.

8. Attend a Carnival

Throughout summer, there are typically several carnivals, festivals, and fairs. Your children will love spending a day at any of these events. They can play games, win prizes, eat greasy food, go on rides, and truly feel like a kid!

9. Take a Road Trip

Summer is all about vacations! And thanks to your child’s completely open schedule, you can finally take that family road trip you’ve been dreaming of. No matter where you’re headed, family vacations will create memories you’ll all hold close to your heart.

10. Go to Summer Camp

Arguably the most popular summer activity for kids is summer camp! No matter the length of time they’ll be gone, whether a week or several months, summer camp is a great opportunity for your child to learn crucial life skills. They’ll learn to be independent likely for the first time, they’ll learn how to make friendships with people from different backgrounds, and they’ll learn how to lead and be respectful of others through camp sports and team-building activities. If you’re sending your child to summer camp, learn about Ship Camps so they can travel to camp stress-free.

It’s hard to imagine that summer is right around the corner!
