For many kids, summer camp is their first taste of independence. And with that, comes a whole new set of responsibilities. One of which is caring for their own health and hygiene while away from parents. So, with summer camp in full swing, we’ve gathered the most important ways to maintain good health at summer camp.

5 Ways to Maintain Good Health at Summer Camp

1. Sleep

When your child is surrounded by other campers, he/she will almost certainly be tempted to stay up late at night telling jokes and sharing scary stories. While that’s completely fine for your child to do every now and then, be sure to remind them just how important sleep is. Getting enough sleep will help your child maintain a healthy weight, it lowers the risk of several health issues, reduces stress, and thoroughly prepares them for the day ahead.

2. Diet

Diet is key in learning how to maintain good health at summer camp. It’s super important for your child to be mindful of what they’re eating while not under the supervision of parents. Too much sugar and not enough fruits, vegetables, vitamins, and other essentials can negatively impact nearly every part of the body. Your child will likely be even more active while at camp, and it’s important that they fuel themselves with healthy food.

3. Water

Hydration, hydration, hydration! It’s important always but even more crucial while your child is increasingly active while at summer camp. There’s nothing wrong with a juice or soda every now and then, but your child should be drinking several bottles of water a day. Water aids digestion, normalizes blood pressure, cushions joints, regulates body temperature, and so much more!

4. Stay Active

Part of learning how to maintain good health at summer camp is paying attention to activity levels. We all understand your child may need to sit out of an activity or two, but it’s important that they remain active while at camp! Not only is it beneficial for their health, but it also ensures they get the most out of their summer camp experience.

5. Hygiene

Hygiene is yet another task your child will be responsible for. And because you can’t be there to remind them to brush their teeth, hair, or take a shower, this is something you should work on and discuss with your child before they leave for summer camp. Implement best practices months ahead of camp to get them used to taking care of themselves on their own.

These tips will allow your child to maintain good health at summer camp while also experiencing a dose of life on their own.
