Is your child’s camp session coming to a close? We know you must be so excited about their journey back home from summer camp! It can, however, be a jarring experience for your child. Having spent so much time in a different location surrounded by different people, it can take time for them to be completely comfortable at home again. Here’s how to make the transition home from summer camp easier than ever.
How to Ensure a Smooth Transition Home from Summer Camp
1. Set A Schedule
One of the best ways to ensure a smooth transition home from summer camp is to implement a set schedule. Your child was likely on a strict schedule while at summer camp. So now, it’s time to create a schedule that works at home. This should include meal times, bedtimes, playtime, and potentially homework time if your child is back in school.
2. Listen
Your child is likely to have dozens of stories to tell you about their summer camp experiences. While they may be far more exciting to your child than they are to you, be sure to actively listen to them and express your interest.
3. Embrace Their Freedom
Summer camp, for many kids, is their first taste of freedom and independence. So, it can be difficult coming back and being under the supervision of parents at all times. Consider giving them a little more freedom when appropriate. Keep in mind that they’ve likely learned several new life skills and lessons while at camp!
4. Embrace Who They Are
Summer camp can be a great confidence boost. Maybe your child excelled at a certain activity. Maybe they were the most well-behaved camper there! No matter what it is, be sure to congratulate them and encourage them to keep being who they are to boost their confidence.
5. Make Them Comfortable
After a long time away from home, a great way to welcome your child back is by doing things they love and are comfortable with! For example, for their first day back at home, consider letting them pick what they’d like to do, where they’d like to eat, etc. It may take time for your child to be completely comfortable after being home from summer camp. It’s best to remain patient and allow your child to go at their own pace.
